The Vitamin D Solution: 
A 3 Step Strategy to Cure Our Most Common Health Problem

 

A press release by the publisher Penguin tells us about the release of Dr. Michael F. Holick’s latest book called “The Vitamin D Solution:  A 3 Step Strategy to Cure Our Most Common Health Problems”.  This book tells of medical problems caused by a deficiency of Vitamin D, and also what to do to obtain optimal levels of this nutrient.  The press release says:

“What do obesity, heart disease, depression, diabetes, and fibromyalgia have in common?  The answer is vitamin D deficiency. More than 200 million Americans lack this essential vitamin.  In the landmark book The Vitamin D Solution, Dr. Michael F. Holick identifies the causes of vitamin D deficiency, outlines why it is essential to your health, and provides a 3-step program to attain optimal levels of Vitamin D.

Increasing levels of vitamin D can treat, prevent, and even reverse a remarkable number of daily ailments, from high blood pressure to back pain. It can lessen the symptoms of chronic conditions such as diabetes and arthritis, and actually prevent infectious diseases, including H1N1 and cancer. Dr. Holick also credits vitamin D with improving infertility, weight control, memory and mood.”

 

30 Minutes Sunbathing = 20,000 IU Vitamin D!
(1 glass of milk is around 200 IU Vitamin D!)
 

Did you know that in the middle of the summer, if you go out and lie in the sun for 30 minutes with your bathing suit on in the middle of the day, your body will produce around 20,000 IU of Vitamin D?  This is the amount of Vitamin D in around 200 glasses of milk.   And the current US RDA for Vitamin D is only 200 IU per day for those ages 14-50!  It may be that our bodies were designed to get the vitamin D they need primarily from the sun, and in the summertime, we should be “stocking up” by sunbathing* on a regular basis.  Do you do that?

 

*And by sunbathing, we mean in the middle of the day (10am to 3pm), wearing a bathing suit, without sunscreen.  When exposed to the sun at other times, the sun is simply not strong enough for you to make enough vitamin D.  Also, if you cover most of your body with clothes or with sunscreen, you will not be making very much Vitamin D!  I know this is contrary advice than what we have been getting, but it appears that it is the burning of the skin that predisposes one to skin cancer, and also NOT having enough Vitamin D (not being out in the sun)!  Those closest to the equator have higher levels of Vitamin D and lower levels of cancer!

Of course you want to work your way up to the 30 minutes recommended, especially if you have fair skin or burn easily.  In addition, there is some evidence that most sunscreens contain chemicals that, when they react with the sun, cause cancer, so your sunscreen may not really be helping you to prevent cancer anyways.
 

Recommendation:  have your vitamin D levels checked - most doctors will do this now for just the price of your co-pay.  According to many health professionals, the optimal value you want is around 50 - 65 ng/ml for the 25-hydroxyvitamin D (this is also called the 25(OH)D test, and it is important that your doctor orders this test, as the 1,25(OH)D test is not as good of a marker of overall Vitamin D status.  Most lab results will tell you that 20-56ng per ml is normal, but once again, this is not optimal.  Many who have done their research will tell you that you never want your Vitamin D levels to fall below 32 ng/ml; even though this is within the “normal” range, it puts you at serious increased risk for cancer, heart disease and many more diseases.

If you are unable to get sun exposure in the summer, and you want to supplement with Vitamin D, make sure and 1)  Get the natural Vitamin D3 type of supplement, and 2) Get your blood tested, especially if you are taking high amounts.  Many practitioners are now recommending adults get 2-4000 IU per day of supplementation in the fall, winter and spring months when you are not getting exposed to sunlight that is strong enough to make a significant amount of Vitamin D.  If you got a lot of sun in the summer, you might be OK until the winter or spring, but you won’t really know unless you test!
